Dr. Breck Tiernan, D.P.M.

Dr. Breck Tiernan

While attending the University of Iowa, I looked for a career in the medical field that was challenging and yet set in a controlled comfortable environment. My studies lead me to the Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. I was thrilled that there was a study of medicine that was mostly beloved by its patients and not feared like many others in the medical field. Being a foot and ankle specialist has allowed me to work in a comfortable office setting and surgical centers rather than working on floors of a hospital.

I am hoping that this brief introduction into my patient care philosophy and educational background will provide you with enough information for you to make an important decision about your foot and ankle physician.

The doctor is often more to be feared than the disease. ~French Proverb

This Proverb hold true in today's system of medicine and says a lot about the perceived doctor patient relationship. In my clinical experience, patient comfort and education during an appointment are the most important aspects of any doctor visit. My goal as a physician is to make the appointment as relaxing and calming as possible, and to also educate the patient about the condition and possible treatments. I encourage all questions about the condition and treatments. I will explore all options of treatment for every condition and I will only consider surgery when all conservative treatment has been exhausted.

Educational and training background is also important for the patient to consider making an informed decision about their physician. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Chemistry before heading to medical school in Des Moines, Iowa. My education finally ended here in the Chicago area where I completed a rigorous multi-year surgical residency at Norwegian American Hospital. At Norwegian American Hospital, I completed over 800 foot and ankle procedures in 24 months. I am trained in all surgeries of the foot and ankle including reconstructive surgery. While training at my residency, I took numerous classes on lower limb deformities and External Fixation techniques all around the country. I have published two papers with one on them being in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Currently, I have privileges at Norwegian American Hospital and numerous surgical centers in Chicago and the southwest suburbs. I am also involved with the training of residents in Chicago, teaching surgical techniques.

I hope you find this web site informative in your search for a foot and ankle specialist. I thank you for your time.

Dr. Joel Anderson, D.P.M.

Dr. Joel Anderson, D.P.M.

So many times a patient schedules an appointment to see a doctor that they know very little about, or worse, nothing at all. An appointment is scheduled with some nervousness about the capabilities of the physician they are scheduling with, and often times cancelled based on what they don't know about the doctor.

If you have a moment, I would like to briefly introduce myself and my philosophy on patient care. My name is Dr. Joel R. Anderson; I'm a physician and surgeon of foot and ankle disorders. I'm originally from Racine, WI and my undergraduate studies were from the University of Wisconsin where I graduated with honors and received an Academic Achievement Award. I moved to Chicago in 1992 where I graduated from the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1996. While attending medical school, I was given a Presidential Scholarship for academic excellence. Following medical school graduation, I completed two years of residency training at Oak Forest Hospital of Cook County and Norwegian American Hospital. Both are local Chicago hospitals that offered exhaustive training in the medical and surgical treatment of all foot and ankle disorders ranging from infants to the elderly, including elective surgical procedures with cosmetic considerations, extensive diabetic patient management and emergency surgical situations. I was the chief resident at both hospitals. During my second year of residency, I went to Mexico for a Medical Mission at Matehuala General Hospital in Matehuala, Mexico to perform surgical procedures on a multitude of foot and ankle pathology from infants to adults.

I started in private practice after my residency training in 1998. I have been fortunate with the education that I have received and continue to give back by being an integral part of the residency training program at Norwegian American Hospital. I am currently the associate residency director and surgical consultant for all foot and ankle problems. Norwegian American Hospital is one of multiple affiliations. Others include: Advanced Ambulatory Surgery Center, Water Tower Surgery Center, Same Day Surgery Center, Jefferson Park Podiatric Surgicare and Parkside Urology Center at Lutheran General Hospital. I am certified in Electrocorporeal Shockwave Therapy, Echosonographic Ultrasound Imaging, Nerve Decompression Surgery, Laser Surgery and Arthroscopic/Endoscopic procedures.

I can bring a wide range of experience and training to all patients ranging from infant to adult. I believe the key to patient care is attention to details and that taking time with patients is the most important aspect of your medical treatment. I take pride in establishing a personalized program and a treatment regimen that corresponds to my individual patient needs. Though surgery is an important component to the correction of many foot and ankle ailments, I strongly believe it is a last option after all conservative therapy has been exhausted. I am proud of the fact that patients are well informed and that we reach treatment options together after discussing their advantages.

Dana Wisby, DPM

Many people often ask me, why did you choose podiatry? What I’ve found over the years is that my answer hasn’t changed but only grown into a more enthusiastic, in depth response. I choose podiatry after graduating from Denison University in Granville, OH. I was a pre-medical biology major and psychology minor looking into the medical field and not really finding my niche.  It was when I looked further into other medical fields, that I discovered this wonderful profession. I was so pleasantly surprised at all the variety that encompasses this field. We get to spend time actually treating patients as well as be trained in the surgical realm so to me, that is the best of both worlds.

My goal is to make every patient that chooses me as their physician to feel comfortable asking any and all questions as well as trusting in my expertise and training. I face every day with a smile and my goal is for you to walk out of the office feeling that you were treated in the best way possible. I like to explain my treatment philosophies to patients in ways that they will understand as well as giving them all options possible for their consideration. It is my firm belief that the patient should make decisions for their health, my goal is to provide them with my expert medical opinion and solutions.  I also trust that all conservative options should be exhausted before surgical intervention is considered.

My strong educational background should also be considered when making a decision to start a new relationship with a physician. I was born and raised in Racine, WI and graduated from J.I. Case High School in the top of my class after taking accelerated courses. I then received a half tuition academic scholarship to Denison University where I completed my undergraduate studies. I was a Biology major and psychology minor. I then graduated from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 2008. Following graduation from medical school, I completed a three year residency program at Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, IL where I worked under fellow program graduates Dr. Joel Anderson and Dr. Breck Tiernan. The residency program was very well-rounded with a wide variety of surgical cases for patients of all ages. I was the chief resident in 2010-11 and was very strongly trained in all foot and ankle surgeries including reconstructive surgeries with external fixation. I completed a 36 month training where I completed close to 600 surgeries as well as extensive clinical work in private settings as well as rounding work on hospital floors. I was also extensively trained in wound management at the Norwegian American Wound clinic.

I have privileges at Norwegian American Hospital and will also be involved in the training of residents with the program that I completed. Thank you for taking to time to learn a little more about me.
